Understanding how much funding you may receive under the Support at Home program can feel overwhelming. This guide explains how Support at Home funding works, the different funding classifications, and how funding is used to help older Australians remain independent at home.
What Is Support at Home?
Support at Home is the Australian Government's in-home aged care program designed to help older Australians live safely and independently in their own homes for longer.
Funding is allocated based on an individual's assessed support needs and can be used to access services such as:
- Personal care
- Domestic assistance
- Community nursing
- Transport
- Social support
- Allied health services
- Assistive technology and home modifications
Following an assessment through My Aged Care, eligible participants are assigned a Support at Home classification which determines their annual funding amount.
How Are Support at Home Funding Levels Determined?
Funding is based on an independent assessment of your care and support needs.
Assessors consider factors such as:
- Personal care requirements
- Mobility and safety
- Health conditions
- Cognitive function
- Social support needs
- Ability to manage daily activities independently
The higher your support needs, the higher the funding classification you may receive.
Support at Home Funding Classifications
The Support at Home program includes eight funding classifications designed to reflect an individual's assessed care and support needs.
As support needs increase, the funding available also increases. This allows older Australians to access the services they need to remain safe, independent and connected in their own homes.
Funding classifications are determined through an assessment process and may take into account factors such as:
- Personal care requirements
- Mobility and falls risk
- Chronic health conditions
- Nursing and clinical support needs
- Cognitive changes and memory concerns
- Ability to manage daily activities independently
- Social support requirements
- Carer availability and support networks
- Home environment and safety considerations
Every person's circumstances are unique. Two people with similar health conditions may receive different funding classifications depending on their individual goals, risks and support needs.
Your assessor will determine the most appropriate funding classification based on your overall situation and the level of support required to help you remain living independently at home.
